Food part 4 Acid Alkaline foods and inflammation

Blog 9 12th June
Hello, more about food…
There is so much to cover with this huge subject food, and choice…
Another really useful consideration is acid and alkaline diets.  It would be ideal to have 80% alkaline foods and 20% acid foods.  Alkaline foods are fruits and veggies mostly: lemons, limes, kiwifruit, most vegetables.  Acid forming foods are meat, white processed foods – sugar, wheat, grains that have been processed, eg white rice, cous cous. Fish is not as bad as red meat and chicken.   Check out GOOGLE for an acid/alkaline recommendations. These complex protein foods take a lot to digest and bring your body into an acid state.  Inflammation is all about acid in the blood, the brain, the digestive system and how it brings oxidative stress and free radical damage.  The by-products of cells are acid and this is then excreted into the blood and passed on to the liver and kidneys to eliminate out of the body.  If there is too much acid in the body inflammation starts.  Our joints hurt, we feel vulnerable especially if the joints are knocked or banged.  The best way to keep this from happening is by keeping our good bacteria in the gut healthy and plentiful.  The food is so important in our systems that we need to be mindful and offset any free radical damage.  We can do this by taking a multi vit especially with magnesium and zinc as these two – often over looked minerals are depleted in our soil.  Magnesium has so many great uses that it is worthwhile taking one at night to help us rest, recuperate and restore.  Zinc is also important for skin, depression and mood swings.
Talking of mood swings SUGAR will make us have the peaks and troughs. Insulin floods into our blood to take away the glucose in our blood – stores it in our cells as FAT unless we use it within 20 mins of consuming it. Once stored our blood level sugar drops again, we get grouchy and crave more sugar – a vicious cycle.  SO it’s not ideal…. Sugar = insulin spikes = acid build up = pain and inflammation.   Nobody needs that.
Inflammatory diseases are arthritis both osteo and rheumatoid, Coeliac disease, food intolerances, even anxiety and stress are inflammation in the brain.  Eating rubbish food, ie fast food, takeaways, processed etc will bring our body into a state of inflammation and it goes OUT OF BALANCE.  Stress in the body and outside breaks the body down from the inside out.
I am currently at a Congress in Brisbane and discussing mood disorders run by Metagenics. Fascinating and consolidating on what I already knew but now science has got good data to support what us naturopaths already knew by observation.  Even ancient Greek, Chinese and Indian civilisations knew this but at last science have caught up.
Again eat whole foods, non-processed foods, cook like granny used to… and the cravings will stop as nutritionally your body is getting what it needs.
Cook, share and enjoy 🙂
