Floatation tanks and sound to help relieve the stress.
The other week I went along to Tinakori Road to the Salt pod. They offer a floatation tank experience, also known as sensory deprivation tank. The movies have used them; Altered States, an old 80’s movie, which William Hurt went to another place and dimension. Another is Dare Devil, where he is blind and so due to the plasticity of the brain the hearing and smell was far more developed. By putting himself in a tank he was able to tune out all the noises he was able to hear and so rested. NBA players also use them. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=14317328.
There are 500kg of Epsom salts and 800 litres of water. It is complete darkness unless you want a series of lights – the chakra colours, (purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red) to glow as part of the experience. These light frequencies are also believed to have curative powers. (Explained in a future blog.) The idea is you have no other stimulations to the brain and therefore able to rest. This takes time in a busy world. Like a run or some other exercise it takes about ten minutes for the body to settle into exercise and warm up. After that the exercise is much easier. I believe this is true for the brain as well. It takes me about ten minutes to quieten and still my brain then it’s “the space between the notes” where it happens. The neurons don’t fire so often except for the essentials (ANS). Allowing stillness to take over.
In my research I have found that science has discovered the different resonance of the brain and its waves. Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Theta. These different frequencies of these sound waves affect the brain in different ways. Alpha is relaxing but can also stimulate the memory and creativeness. For meditation the Theta wave allows the brain to rest and restore itself, rather than sleep (delta) where the brain restores the body. Theta waves takes away years of disciplined meditation in trying to find “the place” or “enlightenment”. Instead the waves rest down the brain as the brain mirrors its frequency and goes into that meditative state. It’s worth a try. Especially if you have a long train journey, or someone else is driving. Down load onto your smart phone or get it through You Tube and listen. Just look up any of the waves frequencies and there will be an array of relaxing music with the particular wave under it. Some are with piano, or pan pipes, or nature sounds. Find the one that is most relaxing for you. I think it would be nice to have a theta wave pumped through the water in the salt pod in order to really get the best out of it. Have a listen … brainsync.com is a place to find out more about sound waves.
