Blog 31 12th December 2016
Christmas is coming hurrah hurrah.
So things have started to wind up or wind down depending on how you look at it. The Christmas trees are going up and the twinkle of lights.  Sadly we don’t get the full effect because it doesn’t get dark early enough.   I loved that in a northern hemisphere, all the decorations hanging from the street lights and shop windows.  Harrods always did special themes in its shop windows and we used to go see as kids.  Fun times.  It’s worth remembering the fun times you had before you grew up and see if you can replicate them in your family.  Keep the traditions going.  It can warm the cockles of your heart and bring a smile to your dial.  Remembering that it really is a time of just being with your family.  A day where no shops are open.  Everybody just has family time.
In Germany every Sunday all the shops are closed.  Only the odd café is open.  This makes for more family time.  Tend to go out and tramp, ski, socialise in the village near where they serve warm mulled wine, from small stands in the town centre. Chat, connect and share time with families.
Now it seems in New Zealand here we often go out to the Mall to look, spend money (consumerism) can’t it be done on another day.  Bet we would find a way if we needed to.  That is how I remember it was growing up.  It is good having supermarkets open and as do Germany they have street markets selling food on a Sunday.  We have one down town by the habour and Te papa.  Excellent fruit and veg likewise for many other suburbs fruit and veg market.  It’s nice strolling around picking your produce for the week. Smelling real tomatoes etc. It good not to have perfect fruit and sometimes they taste better.  Often the slightly smaller veg, ie, broccoli, or cauliflower have more nutrients, and if possible get the broccoli without the hollow in the stalk.  This shows a lack of nutrients.  And keep the broccoli in water or dribble a little into the plastic bag (preferably with no holes!) and wrap up the head and store. Stays firm for longer, this can also revive floppy broccoli from the shops this way.
Try and organise the days up to Christmas and try the minimalist food way.  Live off the leftovers for the following couple of days and pickle with cold turkey can help the digestion.  Add apple cider vinegar to water to stop acid reflux if you have over indulged a little.  The occasional probiotic tablet can certainly help with rich food.  Drink pineapple juice if wheat doesn’t really agree or ACV.
And above all enjoy and throw guilt away for a week and savour the really yummy stuff. Its good for the soul, just don’t excess toooooo much ! 😉

  1. I enjoyed imagining your German and English Christmas visuals. Recently the warmer weather has made me want to spring outside and walk. (After I’ve done my glut exercises). Take care.
