Stiff and sore necks…
Ortho-Bionomy® is a modality that listens to the mechanism of the body to help release and relax tension patterns in a non-invasive way using very gentle manipulation.  I explained quite a bit last week as to how it came about and what issues it can assist in resolving.
The principle of Ortho is about placing yourself in a position of comfort and relaxing in that space or position.  That can be tricky as so often we have niggles, sore bits, tender spots or just a body of tension.  Sitting or standing at the desk is often the only activity that we do all day and generally the body isn’t made for that.  A phase did come about a year or two ago about a standing desk this was found to be really good for those who don’t have a weight issue, no sore knees, hips, ankles, feet and lower back.  On BBC Knowledge they reported that standing at a desk all day uses up to 30,000 extra calories burned per YEAR. However as with most things NOTHING IN EXCESS EVERYTHING IN MODERATION… What people were finding is that if their body was not in balance then standing all day can exasperate issues.  This reminds me of the phase of sitting on Swiss Balls, again great for engaging the core muscles but can be very distracting for the mind.  And especially if you are not a gym bunny! For Cross fit people its fine but really how many of us are a cross fit bunny…!  Again swap it around, change it up and move as much as possible.
Ortho- bionomy® self-care exercises can help alleviate issues and put the body back into comfort and balance.
1, “Pencil in the ear”…. J this is for stiff necks.  What we find is that large circles of the head and neck do not always help or they can hurt whilst doing it.  So imagine you have a pencil in the ear so that it is perpendicular to the head, and an imaginary piece of paper, then you write you name in small letters.  Do it for both sides.  DO NOT walk around the office with a pencil in the ear as health and safety could be a factor if you slipped over….??? The idea is very small micro movements to help loosen off the micro muscles in the neck. Less is more. This allows the muscles to relax and unwind the tension in the neck.  You can do it at the desk or waiting for a bus.  I think it looks like a nodding dog that we used to see on the back of a car shelf. J.  Also only once or twice a day as too much will make the muscles over work and then they get sore. Then to complete this exercise imagine a pencil is sticking out of the top of your head and do 10 small circles clockwise and 10 anticlockwise.
Have a go and share with friends to help their necks.
