As a naturopath and a nutritionist I see lots of different diets that work for different kind of ailments.
We hear a lot about diets in the media, low fat, low carb, paleo, vegetarian, vegan, to name but a few. Here’s a couple more diets for more medical reasons.
A client came into my clinic today and is doing the elimination diet. This is really useful if you feel tired or fatigued for no known reason. The blood tests come back normal, you aren’t really stressed but you keep getting colds, picking up a verruca at the pool, sniffing a lot, and feel generally tired. This diet allows the food that is eaten to help with the cleansing of the body and eliminate toxins. As well as helping the body to repair. Allow the gut to lose the inflammation, have low allergen foods. These foods are no animal products, (dairy and eggs) but can eat meat – chicken, fish and small amount of red, no pork, no legumes, no grains, organic, no sugar, no gluten, fruit, vegetables, but not of the deadly nightshade family: tomatoes, potatoes, tobacco, eggplant, capsicum, chilli. Plenty of onions and garlic to help the body stave of infection and keep cleansing the blood.
After 28 days you then introduce a food, 3 times a day for 3 days and see how you feel. Keep a diary and scales 1-5 – lethargy, 1-5 sleep, also include mood swings, energy levels, dreams, fatigue levels. Then look back to see how you were in the beginning. Eggs are a good one to start with, then maybe dairy. Keep up with lots of green vegetables and green juices, these bring down the inflammation.
Unfortunately in this day and busyness this isn’t always possible and you have to be really committed and plan ahead. See your trained health practitioner, naturopath if want to begin this. It needs to be planned.
Another deep diet to help cure a chronic problem is the anti-candida diet. Candida is actually the mould on the camembert, and is the basis for thrush. Can occur vaginally, or orally especially if taken oral steroids, the pill, or anti-biotics. These can alter the flora in that area and the gut therefore more susceptible to mould overgrowth. – sounds horrible huh! It can be. It also takes dedication to stick with this diet as well. This is much like the elimination diet above but also includes lots of olive oil, pure grapefruit juice, lots of lemon juice but otherwise, no fruit, no tomatoes, no carrots as these are too sweet and can retrigger the mould. Also as a practitioner I would prescribe 4 different therapies to be swapped. Oregano oil, echinacea, grapefruit seed extract, wormwood, green walnut, strong probiotics, olive leak, kolorex. All of these help with the die off, this is where the candida dies and produces ammonia and the effects are headaches, change of bowel motion, nausea, and cravings for sugar.
Next week I will go into the candida further and another useful diet for autoimmune diseases.
Have a great week.
